Eduardo Borges: "What makes a successful model? Hard work, determination, seriousness and focus"

by Edward with Eduardo

L´Equipe, Ford Models, Elite, Lumiere and now with new agency EABorges International model agency,Eduardo Borges has been into modeling market for 20 years and shares his thoughts and important hints for my World of Models family.

Hello my friends, before we get started I would like to thank you for your kindness. It’s always great to be able to trade ideas through serious, credible media outlets like yours! I was born in Uberaba (Minas Gerais), though I left there at a young age to study in São Paulo, to be more specific in the city of Campinas, where I went to college and earned my specialization. I was educated in phisical therapy (surprised?) and afterwards I moved to Curitiba. I worked for
five years in the field of physical therapy before opening my first modeling agency, L´Equipe CWB,(a São Paulo based franchise of L’Equipe) which I worked for almost three years. That was when I received a proposal from FORD Models Brazil and began to represent them at CWB. After that, I returned to São Paulo, where I worked in the Elite network (exclusively at International depart.) Later on, I worked in the international department of Lumiere Models agency
(also in São Paulo). Currently, I have my own office that works with international representation.

I’m a pretty calm person, I’m not the kind that goes out or parties too much. I’m more of a day person. I’ve been an athlete since my college days (swimmer) and I still keep that habit. Water polo is also one of my hobbies during my free time. It was at CWB that I decided to make it a career, and since I had already been in it for so long, I could see that I had what I needed for a good start.

The modeling market, glamorous? The IN and OUT in fashion trends

In the beginning it may seem glamorous, but actually, it’s hard work and requires a lot of persistence, research and especially feeling. That is, either you have it or you don't. Those who have the feeling, CAN SEE better, while those ones who don't, need to learn to train their gaze. The market has changed a lot over the past 20 years. When I started working as a booker the profession was something very distant from everyone. Only a very select group had access to it. The prerequisites were very strict. Models meant classic features. It’s not like that anymore. Beauty has modernized and recycled itself, so the profession has updated itself to supply the market’s new demands, opening new and different doors.I don’t know if I believe too much in flash trends, like the ones I've been seeing. I believe that what‘s beautiful will always be beautiful and will find its way into the field. An Intelligent attitude is the best and most promising trend. Fashion is a whole mixture of situations and experiences. It’s best to look at everything with an intelligent gaze and learn how to place that into our own attitudes. I think that is the best of all current trends.

Worldwide economic crisis afected the modeling business?

We are currently passing through a delicate moment in the world in which new forms of working are being approached and a worldwide crisis like the one we are experiencing directly affects our work. So, it´s necessary for us to really focus on what is really good with creativity and competency. As I always say: you hold the power if you hold the information. Keeping up-to-date with the world’s economy is a prerequisite for establishing oneself in the international modeling
market. Reading magazines isn’t just enough. They're the final product. You need to know and understand the reasons why that product is being advertised. In other words, to be a good agent

it’s not enough to know everything about fashion. You need to be updated with what’s happening in the world economy. If not, you probably will have a just superficial understanding about this business

Working with the most sucessful models or the past 20 years. Any advice for those interested into modeling world?

Yes, for the past 20 years I have had the privilege of working next to some successful names in the fashion world. I think I´ve learned how to manage careers from the beginning by seeing the career of a few of them, creating an exclusive formula for each one in accordance with their individual profile. I’m a “classic” kind of guy. I believe in classic beauty mixed with something exotic, something special. I don’t have a specific, defined way of working. I just see it and that’s it. I create a career plan and explain step-by-step everything that needs to be done. Then the real work begins,
and we always work together. Currently I represent and manage the careers of many models with
international campaigns, such as:

Lucas Mascarini - Lacoste international campaign
Chiara Soru- Garnier L’oreal international campaign
Mariana DIAS- Palmolive international campaign

And many other young and promising models. What makes a successful model? Hard WORK, determination, seriousness and focus Thinking that it is possible to earn, more than $$, a wealth of life experiences and contact new values (in terms of trips around the world). I believe that the most successful professionals are serious and focused,
well-directioned and concerned about their image. All you need to do is to pay attention to the top models in the spotlight right now. The lack of commitment and information will certainly be the ingredients that will prevent the whole thing from functioning as it should or at least for the time it should.

Upcoming Projects

I have several projects, but at the moment I'm dedicating myself to EABORGES- international model agent, strengthening already established relationships and others that are up and coming. As I said previously, it's always a great pleasure to trade ideas with serious people. We all end up learning that way.
