Photographer Michael Epps: "I don't know if I can define my style in a few words, but I do have a certain aesthetic, that I feel is representative of who I am. I love beauty, timelessness, and emotions"
|
Well thank you for welcoming me to the family. It's always a great feeling being recognized, and appreciated. Photography has always been a part of my life in one form or another. I was born and raised in New York, and I feel incredibly blessed because of it. As a child I was captivated by film, painting, and magazine pictures. I ended up going to film school, and for a while I thought that was where my future was destined, but like a first love, photography was always there. About 3 years ago, I decided to devote my life to this passion, and I've never looked back.
I don't know if I can define my style in a few words, but I do have a certain aesthetic, that I feel is representative of who I am. I love beauty, timelessness, and emotions. Everything I do is based around those three tenets. I mainly photograph men, not just to illustrate their beauty, but to highlight their sensuality, and it's subtle interplay with traditional notions of masculinity. As far as influences go, I absolutely adore Richard Avedon, but there are so many others. The Digital Age and Worldwide economic crisis on fashion photography I think the digital age has equalized the playing field, in terms of instant gratification. It's also much cheaper, and a 100% better for the environment. Quality however is subjective. Only time will tell what will be considered art or crap to future generations I don't know if I can accurately speak about the state of fashion photography, since I'm really just entering that world on the outskirts. I do think that the economic climate, and to a larger extent, the digital age, is shifting the focus and delivery of fashion imagery to online media outlets. I do believe that fashion magazines will always exist to an extent though, since there is really no substitute for the look and feel of the printed image. I certainly hope so.
The special moments behind the scene: chemistry with the models Every time I pick up the camera, it's a special moment for me. Just doing what I love, and learning new things is a constant joy. I love it all.I think every photographer experiences that decisive moment when all the elements line up, and you know it's as right as it could ever possibly be. It's an amazing feeling I try to experience with every shoot. Sometimes I just know during a shoot, and sometimes I don't see it until I'm editing. The main factor in this process, is the chemistry with the model. If trust and comfort are not there, it usually leads to awkwardness in the photos. I would love to be able to help a model get to a positive place in his career. I don't know if that's happened yet, but I have gotten positive feedback about my work with them. I also take it as a good sign, that most of them seem to enjoy working with me more than once Lol
I once had a shoot with the model Frey Mudd, who is one of the most strikingly beautiful models I've ever photographed. We were shooting around Soho, and random people were literally stopping to take out their cell phones, and cameras to snap pics of him. One guy had this amazing camera that totally dwarfed mine, stood right next to me, and started snapping away. He was super rude of course, but I knew at that moment that Frey was a star Top 5 cool favorite places for a shooting and why There are so many places I would love to shoot, but I'll pick 5 dream locations

I'm actually gonna start shooting girls pretty soon! I'm super excited about that actually, and it'll be interesting to see them filtered through my lens. As far as the guys go, I've been working with some great ones lately. Florian Pessenteiner, Josh Gray, Paul Boche, Mitch Baker, Nick Gogel and Berthold Rothas, are all amazingly beautiful, and super cool to work with. They were dream subjects, and made my job that much easier. I've been lucky though, in that most of my models have been amazing to work with When you´ll come to my world? I´m sure you´ll have a real good time under the Brazilian tropical sun! Info contact: Facebook |
